IIT-B girl gets top offer from Uber, to work in US

  1. One of the top ten scorers in JEE (Advanced) in 2013, Aditi Laddha has landed the most sought after job with Uber international.
  2. Laddha is the only girl from the institute to land a US job, probably among the other IITs too.

MUMBAI: Aditi Laddha from Ratlam in MP became a household name back in 2013, when she cleared her JEE (Advanced) with an all-India rank (AIR) of six. Along with another girl, she broke into the male-dominated top 10 ranks of the most competitive entrance exam for undergraduate admissions in the country for the first time. Three years later, Laddha, who choose to study at IIT-Bombay, has landed the top offer during the campus placements.

Course: MEGA

Roll NO: 44268

Studying: IIT-BOMBAY
Laddha was offered the job by Uber International which made the highest offer to students across some of the IITs during this year’s placements that commenced on December 1. She is the only girl from the institute to land a US job, probably among the other IITs too.

In the current final-year batch of BTech in the computer science and engineering department of 90-odd students in computer science and engineering (CSE), only about four or five are girls. Most of the girls have been doing well in studies, said a professor.

Laddha has been a role model for the girls who joined IIT-B after her too, he added. Laddha and Pranjal Khare, who secured an AIR of 10 in 2013 in JEE-Advanced, were picked by Uber.

Among other girls from the class who got good placements this year were Palak Jain (AIR 3 in JEE-Main 2013) and Charmi Dedhia (Mumbai topper, JEE-Advanced 2013). Both were hired by Google for their India office, but the former got placed through the pre-placement route.

With most software giants queuing up to hire students from the CSE department, about 52 had a job by the end of day I, taking into account their pre-placement offers too. Among these, only about seven got placed in US firms.

Only a fraction of students from the class manage to get the crore-plus offers every year. Students also argue that the actual package is only little more than the best domestic offer as the cost of living is higher in the US. With restricted work visas, fewer US firms are visiting IITs for the last two years.

Interestingly, P Sai Sandeep Reddy, who had topped the country in 2013, has opted out of the placement process and intends to pursue research in computer science, said one of his classmates. Some of the other toppers got pre-placement offers from Samsung Korea.
